The soapstone-carved Zimbabwe Bird is the national emblem of Zimbabwe, appearing on the national flags and coats of arms of both Zimbabwe and Rhodesia, as well as on banknotes and coins (first on Rhodesian pound and then Rhodesian Dollar).  It probably represents the Bateleur Eagle or the African Fish Eagle.  This Zimbabwe Soapstone Bird, depicted on this Coin, is on a totem pole that was found at the Zimbabwe ruins.  The Totem is now in the Zimbabwe National Museum.

The Flame Lily (Gloriosa Rothschildiana), depicted on this Coin, is the national flower of Zimbabwe.

The Republic of Zimbabwe (formerly the Republic of Rhodesia), became independent within the British Commonwealth of Nations, on April 18, 1980.  Zimbabwe has been governed by President Robert Mugabe since December 31, 1987.
