On January 27th, 1756, Mozart was born in the city of Salzburg, Austria. Mozart’s musical ability became apparent by the time he reached three years old and intensive musical instruction in clavier, violin and Organ began in earnest directed by his father Leopold who was one of Europe’s leading musical teachers. In the early years of his childhood Mozart took several journeys throughout Europe, commencing in 1762 in Munich with an exhibition at the Court of the Elector of Bavaria and then in the same year at the Imperial Court in Vienna. Mozart visited Vienna in again in 1781 and chose to pursue his career there after its aristocracy took an interest in him and he made this his home until his death on 5th December 1791.
During his career Mozart became one of the most significant and popular composers of European classical music and some of his work is accredited as being masterpieces of operatic, symphonic, piano, choral and chamber, music and is still included in standard concert repertory all over the world.
The front shows a cameo of Mozart in the inner ring with piano keys in the outer ring. The surround reads: “250th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF MOZART 10 DOLLARS”.
The back of the coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley FRBS FSNAD.
