Background Info For Hans Christian Andersen:
The stories of Hans Christian Andersen are some of the most famous fairy tales in the world, including The Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina and The Little Mermaid. Publishers have translated his poetry and stories into more than 150 languages and have inspired ballet, plays and animated films.
Although his stories have an often somber undertone, he is renowned worldwide. The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) has designated his birthday, April 2nd, as International Children’s Book Day. Also, Denmark celebrates Andersen with a statue of ‘The Little Mermaid’ in the capital of his native country, Copenhagen.
In 1835, Andersen released his first book of fairy tales. Noteworthy, critics and the public did not initially welcome these fairy tales. The design of this coin features four stories from this initial book.
