SIERRA LEONE 2006 $1 LEGAL TENDER COPPER- NICKEL COMMEMORATIVE COIN UNCIRCULATED
The Bank of Sierra Leone approved the release of this outstanding legal tender coin to honor one of the World’s most famous and revered artists in 2006, the year that marked the 500th Anniversary of one of his most well known creations – The Mona Lisa.
Leonardo Da Vinci was born on the 14th April 1452 in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near Florence and during his life became one of the great masters of the High Renaissance, who was also celebrated as a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. His innovations in the field of painting influenced the course of Italian art for more than a century after his death, and his scientific studies – particularly in the fields of anatomy, optics, and hydraulics – anticipated many of the developments of modern science.
The front of this spectacular coin shows images of Da Vinci’s masterpieces. The Last Supper is shown in the surround with the Vitruvian Man depicted in the center and throughout the design are other references to his much loved work. The hands of the Mona Lisa are shown below the Vitruvian Man, the upward pointing hand to the left of the design is from the painting of John the Baptist, the hands to the right and above the Vitruvian Man are from the painting of the Virgin of the Rocks and even the blackberries and the oak leaves are taken from Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings. Leonardo’s signature is also shown within the design written backwards and forwards in the mirror-writing style that Leonardo adopted.
In 1495, Leonardo da Vinci began what would become one of history’s most influential works of art – The Last Supper. The Last Supper is Leonardo’s visual interpretation of an event chronicled in all four of the Gospels. The evening before Jesus was betrayed by one of his disciples, he gathered them together to eat, tell them he knew what was coming and wash their feet (a gesture symbolizing that all were equal under the eyes of the Lord). As they ate and drank together, Jesus gave the disciples explicit instructions on how to eat and drink in the future in remembrance of him. It was the first celebration of the Eucharist. Specifically, The Last Supper depicts the next few seconds in this story after Jesus told his disciples that one of them would betray him before sunrise, and all twelve have reacted to the news with different degrees of horror, anger and shock.
The Vitruvian Man was created by Leonardo da Vinci around the year 1487. It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the famed architect, Vitruvius Pollio. The drawing, which is in pen and ink on paper, depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and simultaneously inscribed in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called the Canon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man. It is stored in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, Italy, and, like most works on paper, is displayed only occasionally.
