This listing is for one CIRCULATED:
MOTHER SOW AND HER 5 PIGLETS
LUCK OF THE IRISH
1965 1/2 PENNY LEGAL TENDER VINTAGE BRONZE COIN CIRCULATED
Coin is about 25.5 mm diameter, about the size of USA Quarter.
In 1969, the Irish 1/2 Penny coins were completely redesigned and shrunk in size to correspond to the change over to the modern decimal system.
These old Irish 1/2 pennies are hard to obtain.
In 1926 the government of the newly founded Irish Free State formed a coinage committee to plan for a new Irish coinage. The chairman of the committee was the Irish poet William Butler Yeats. The government decision had already been taken to issue a sterling currency rather than to establish an independent Irish currency. After some deliberation the committee decided that the Irish harp would be used as the national symbol on the coinage as it had been since the 1530’s and that the reverse designs would feature a series of animals important to Ireland’s mainly agricultural economy.
Front of coin shows mother sow and her 5 little piglets.
Ireland Half Penny Lucky Pig.
The Back of the coin shows a harp and says “Eire” which means Ireland in the Irish language and “1965” the year of the coin.
