Description

This listing is for one Brilliant Uncirculated:

ORCA KILLER WHALE
TREASURES OF THE SEA
PRINCIPALITY OF SEALAND
1994 Half Dollar Copper-Nickel Commemorative Coin Brilliant Uncirculated

You may have some difficulty finding Sealand on the map. That is because it is a self-declared nation located on an abandoned 10,000 square foot WWII era radar platform approximately 6 miles off the coast of England.  Sealand was founded in 1967 when “Prince Roy” occupied the platform, declared it a sovereign nation, and set up a pirate radio station.  Though the British government tried to shut down the operation, the British courts held that Sealand was located in international waters and beyond the government’s jurisdiction, so he was free to operate his own “nation”.   Since then the British government opened the country up to commercial radio, which killed off Sealands main revenue source.  In 1978  the “country” was invaded and occupied by a German businessman over a contract dispute, however it was soon retaken by force under the leadership of “Prince Roy.”  Sealand now hosts internet services for those who want their internet activities to be beyond the reach of any national government.

In 1994 Sealand issued a Proof silver dollar coin and a Brilliant Uncirculated copper-nickel half dollar coin.  Both coins show an Orca, also known as a Killer Whale, on one side and the Sealand Arms on the other.  Both coins are 39mm in diameter.  They are both interesting and attractive coins from a rather interesting “nation”.

This listing is for the Brilliant Uncirculated copper-nickel version.

The coin has a half dollar face value but is not legal tender anywhere.

This 39 mm diameter coin is much larger than both USA quarter (24.26 mm in diameter) and USA half dollar (30.61 mm in diameter).

The orca or killer whale is a toothed whale that is an efficient predator, even attacking huge young blue whales.  Their only enemy is human beings. Orcas live in small, close-knit, life-long pods and have 1 blowhole.  The killer whale belongs to the family of dolphins and is the biggest dolphin.  It is sometimes called the “wolf of the sea” because its behavior is similar to that of wolves.

Orcas grow to be about 27-33 feet (8-10 m) long, weighing more than 8,000-12,000 pounds (3.600-5.400 kg).  The male orca is larger than the female.  They are the largest member of the dolphin family.
