Believe it or not, Paddington Bear turned 50 in 2008!  He first appeared in Michael Bond’s children’s book, A Bear Called Paddington, in 1958.  The endearing character was inspired by a lone teddy which Bond noticed on a shelf in a London store on Christmas Eve of 1956.  Unable to resist, Bond bought the bear for his wife and named him Paddington, where they lived.  Just 10 days later he had written his first book.

Paddington Bear is now a classic English icon and one of the most beloved and adorable characters in children’s literature.  The tales of the lost bear discovered at London’s Paddington Station by the Brown family, wearing his trademark duffle coat and carrying his battered suitcase, have charmed the whole world ever since.  Another 10 books have been written since 1958 and to mark 50 years of Paddington, in 2008 the author had published a new story – Paddington Here and Now.
