In loving memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, whose life was so tragically cut short in a fatal car accident on 31st August 1997, this coin was released in 2007. Diana’s involvement and dedication to caring for those who endured the hardships of disease, poverty and war often draw an analogy with that of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who also passed away in 1997 only 6 days after the death of Princess Diana. Immediately after Diana’s death, Mother Teresa sent a condolence message that said, “She was very concerned for the poor. She was very anxious to do something for them, and it was beautiful. That is why she was close to me.” Princess Diana was buried with a rosary given to her by Mother Teresa.
Mother Teresa had written to Diana in 1991 and their first meeting was to have been in London for the presentation of an award, but it was called off because of Mother Teresa’s poor health. In fact they first met in February 1992 at Mother Teresa’s convent in a working-class district in Rome, where they prayed together. In loving memory of these two remarkable ladies, so different in age and background yet so similar in their wish to help those who suffered, this coin has been released which depicts this first meeting. Their final meeting was in June 1997 when the two met privately and then embraced as Princess Diana left the Missionaries of Charity house in the Bronx. This coin, presented on behalf of the British Virgin Islands depicts the first meeting of these two remarkable women.
The back of the coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley FRBS FSNAD.
